Have we lost our first love?

My mum used to often tell my dad, “when was the last time you bought me a card or flowers for my birthday or valentine’s day or told me that you love me?” My dad’s standard reply was, “am I not working hard to provide you with everything you need, is that not proof enough that I love you?” 😳It was only when my dad was much older that the penny dropped and we actually saw them “having a loving relationship.” 🥰 I guess many couples get so busy serving their families that they make no time for “special dates” with each other!

It has been a while since I’ve had a coffee date with my first love, JESUS.😔

Today’s gospel Luke 18: 9-14 was about the “virtuous” Pharisee boasting about his “good” character while the tax collector humbly acknowledges his sins and asks for mercy. Our parish priest Fr. Janeesh, respectfully got us “daily mass goers” to examine whether we have a personal, loving RELATIONSHIP with God or are merely caught up with performing rituals or activities?

Recently a priest gifted with the Word of Knowledge, told me that “God knows you are engaged in a lot of ministries but He wants to have a closer RELATIONSHIP with you and wants you to you spend time with Him ALONE.” 🙏 God was personally reminding me through Fr. Rojan, that I was neglecting my first love and that He was missing our closeness… as was I. ❤️

And that’s why it has been a while since I last wrote a Coffee with Jesus post. 😔The honest truth is that I have been busy “doing things,” grieving, praying and ministering in rosary, charismatic and Bible study groups, but I have not regularly made time to listen in silence, one-on-one, to love and adore my beloved Jesus. Yes, I have certainly taken my first love for granted and missed out on my coffee dates. 🤦‍♀️

It is not a coincidence that yesterday’s gospel is also reminding us that our relationship with God is based on the first commandment…

God continuously reminds His people to love Him FIRST, just as He did through John in Ephesus…

Rev2:3-4, “ You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Repent and do the things you did at first.”

Today, even priests and lay people are being reminded

“We do not need activists in the church but we need ADORERS to love and worship God above all.”

Cardinal Robert Sarah

Let me close with this beautiful story narrated by Fr. Rojan. St. Ignatius of Antioch was being led to his execution. He was uttering the name of Jesus, his first love. The soldiers commanded him to stop or they would cut off his tongue. He told them, you can cut off my tongue, but my love for Jesus is imprinted on my heart and you cannot take that away from me. His heart was untouched by the lions who devoured him and the soldiers were shocked to find the inscription of JESUS CHRIST in letters of gold written on his biological heart.

What is imprinted on my heart? When was the last time I told God that I love him above all else?

Let us pray: As the deer pants for water, Lord, let my soul long for you and desire to worship and praise you with my whole heart. Let me desire to love you as you have loved me, more than any other, so much more than anything.. Amen

  1. Such a beautiful reflection. So true- we need to remember that our relationship with Jesus- our first love- should be the one we need to work on and strengthen.
All else falls into place after that.
I’ve missed your coffee with Jesus posts.
    Thanks for sharing 🙏

  2. There are as many ways we relate to God as there are human persons. We rejoice in that freedom ans diversity of relationships. We feel it more intense at times, at times we have a sense of its absence. But we are always linked to God the very basis of our lives.

  3. What a wonderful post! Yesterday, I took a walk with Jesus after many many days. I could listen, think and view my life so clearly in his refreshing presence. Your blog has reminded and reassured me of God’s love for me and our need to love him in return with our ‘whole’ heart! ♥️

Incidentally I also started the day playing and singing ‘As the deer…’ to my son. .

What a wonder-worker is the holy spirit who works unanimously for the good of all those the who love and serve the Lord!
